I don’t know if you know this about me, but I love pizza! Cheese and bread are some of my favorite things so it only makes sense I would be obsessed with pizza right? There is nothing like the satisfaction of all your favorite things coming together to make your taste buds do a happy dance. And boy, does pizza make my taste buds sing like my auntie’s church choir! I had the pleasure of having dinner with my partner and a couple of friends which made this adventure even better in my opinion.
A Little Pizza Background
Assembly Brewing was started by George Johnson and Adam Dixon both of whom have lived in SE Portland for well over a decade. With Johnson’s skills as a brewer and pizza maker the two decided to open a brewery in the neighborhood they called home. They have certainly filled the void of delicious food and beer in this area.
Johnson hailed from Detroit and has brought the real deal along with him. This was confirmed by a friend who is actually from Detroit as well, and I trust her judgement of good pizza. He also studied and learned from the best to make sure Portlanders were able to enjoy the highest quality. We all know Portland love it’s food and is very picky about it.
The beer is also hand-crafted right on site and has very straightforward names. IPA, Stout, Blackberry Cider, so on and so forth. Johnson started brewing beer very early in life and the only thing we Portlanders love more than food, is beer.
The Experience: Pizza And Then Some
We were lucky to try this place on such a nice day. They have a great patio area with a number of picnic table style seating, and they even have heaters out there if it’s a bit chilly! Our waitress was super friendly and explained the beers to us since we did not go inside to look at the list. She did let us know they were working on their beer list for the tables but for now she was the one to ask. When you go inside there is a huge list but for those of us who wanted to soak up some rays, you at least will have an awesome waitress to clue you in on what’s offered.
Our group ordered a pepperoni pizza and pesto rolls. All of us love bread and cheese so we knew we were in for a treat. My girl friend is originally from Detroit so the pressure was on! The beers came out pretty quick and we of course do what friends do. Drink and talk until the food came out and shut us up.
Drum Roll: The Pizza!
Another note, this brewery is dog friendly, so there were lots of people along with their pets out on the patio as well. This is the kind of place I’d be perfectly happy to go alone have a beer and read a book. But, I had my friends and it was pretty fun. When the food came out we didn’t even get a chance to take a picture, we dug right in. The petso rolls were amazing they have garlic butter and gooey cheese. My heart be still. Oh and the pizza. Oh. My. Goodness. Yes! Pizza win! Even my Detroit friend was pretty impressed.
The cheese was perfectly melted. The sauce was hands down one of the best ones I’ve had in a very long time. And the pepperoni were deliciously soft complimenting the crispy crust. Just in case you didn’t know, the corners are the best. If you have to fight for them, do it!
To Go Or Not To Go?
Are you nuts? What are you waiting for? Get over to Assembly Brewing and get yourself a pizza and beer. You won’t be disappointed. Hey, you can even pet a dog or five. If you are like me then probably all the dogs that walk by. Our group ended up staying there for three hours eating, drink and generally have a great time. The atmosphere invites you to stay awhile and the pizza demands your attention.
I think this place will become one of my regular haunts to go out for pizza. If you see me there, say hi! Because this summer, I’m all about food, drink and fun!
